Migrating apps to hybrid and multi-cloud platforms is the future — here’s why

By: Zeb Ahmed

Many enterprises are looking to hybrid cloud and multiple cloud platforms for their application and business needs. A recent IDC white paper found that 59 percent of senior IT professionals surveyed are using multiple cloud providers and 31 percent plan to adopt a similar strategy within two years.

Is a hybrid IT or multi-cloud platform part of your strategy, or are you just starting your cloud adoption journey? Or maybe you need help performance testing your production and development applications on potential platforms? We can help. IBM Hybrid Cloud Services just launched Hybrid Migration Service. Move apps to private and public clouds

Your team can digitally purchase services to discover and migrate workloads across x86 based multi-cloud environments in your dashboard. And discover and migrate existing applications to public and private clouds to test functionality, compatibility, performance, scalability and make critical platform decisions. With seamless API integration into public clouds, such as IBM Cloud, AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform, and support for popular hypervisors, including VMware, Microsoft Hyper-V, Citrix Hypervisor and KVM, moving workloads is simplified.

“Solving for migrations to achieve a hybrid or multi-cloud architecture is one of most important initiatives for IBM Services — we’ve already completed more than 100,000 migrations” says Laurence Guihard-Joly, General Manager, Cloud Migration, IBM Services. “Enterprises are evaluating cloud platforms and want the ability to move to the cloud quickly. With this new offering, clients can easily move workloads across all cloud platforms to test functionalities and migrate in a self-service manner. Our migration services are here to help for more complex environments, and our experts can support situations where clients require a white-glove approach.”

New migration service offerings

Here are all the migration and discovery offerings for hybrid IT and multi-cloud environments you can choose from:

  • Self-service migration: You can migrate workloads between public and private cloud environments such as IBM Cloud, AWS, Azure and Google Cloud Platform.
  • Self-service discovery: You can use this service for application affinity mapping.
  • Customized managed migration service: IBM Services tailors a migration and modernization effort that matches your company’s requirements.

Conversion across cloud platform formats from physical to virtual is an inherent feature of this service — it can make applications cloud native, based on source and target environment selections. And you have the option to stand up private network links across environments or use built-in data encryption to go over wide area networks (WANs) or virtual private networks (VPNs).

For complex workloads that require application discovery and dependency mapping, there’s an optional discovery service. It’s consumed digitally and integrates into the migration portal to create workload migration application templates.
