Q&A: Managing hybrid infrastructure and evolving network needs with Annapoorni Chittore

By: Annapoorni Chittore

As you strive to use new technologies to meet your business’ evolving needs, your hybrid cloud network infrastructure is likely becoming tougher to manage. An integrated and scalable approach can help you bring the pieces of your heterogeneous network together under one centralized management system.

To understand the opportunities for efficient network management, we put a few burning questions to the IBM Integrated Managed Infrastructure Services for Networking leader, Annapoorni Chittore

What are the challenges you hear from CIOs when it comes to their infrastructure?

Infrastructure should be “always on” and “hassle-free” without much additional investment for future scalability and self-healing from vulnerabilities and attacks. CIOs are looking for infrastructure as a service (IaaS) in a true sense, with less intervention for the CIO in operations.

How critical is the role played by a managed service provider in the evolving network business?

The managed service provider plays a key role in the evolving network business and is valued as a trusted advisor in all the infrastructure capital expenditure (capex) and operational expenditure (opex) decisions. This is an important aspect in the growth of the network business. The scalability of the infrastructure is decided based on the capex investments needed for bringing together the best network infrastructure. The network business is moving toward a software-defined environment and plays a key role in bringing an infrastructure with zero touch provisioning (ZTP).

What can you do to ensure that you have the support that your hybrid cloud network requires?

A hybrid cloud network requires support to integrate physical networks and cloud networks, and also to allow migration from the traditional network to a software-defined network (SDN) to support SDN protocols on both physical and virtual environments with an integrated management framework. Orchestration of these environments plays an important role in building and migrating the hybrid cloud network environments.

How are you managing heterogeneous network technologies in a hybrid cloud environment?

In a hybrid cloud environment, we are adept at managing about 100+ technologies spread between multiple OEMs. Through meticulous planning, we help to migrate the tools and skills from the traditional environment to a virtual environment. A lot of re-skilling programs are included in our training calendar to have a continuously learning team that can acquire and apply necessary new skills and unlearn the traditional physical network skills.

Ultimately, managing hybrid infrastructure on your own while keeping up with IT demands can be complex, costly and time-consuming. Managed network services from IBM can help improve agility, lower costs and reduce complexity across your hybrid cloud, data center, and local and wide area networks. We use software-defined technologies, analytics and automation to integrate networks across carriers and countries for your hybrid cloud environments. Our solutions are designed to help reduce unplanned downtime, improve global agility, simplify management and provide higher network capacity at a lower cost.

IBM Integrated Managed Infrastructure Services can help simplify hybrid infrastructure management with modular services that allow you to pay only for what you need.
