SIAM gives you better visibility into your hybrid IT environment

By: Prakash Somani

In today’s fiercely competitive business world, agility, customer centricity and client reach are the mantras of success. IT organizations are traversing digital transformation by adopting hybrid IT, multi-cloud technologies and as a Service consumption models.

Organizations aimed at getting the best services, consume services from multiple providers, which creates a multi-sourced ecosystem. Naturally, these independent suppliers are accountable only for their services, making it impossible to achieve enterprise-level IT with a single source of truth.

This is where integration becomes vital. To give you an example, during the Gulf War, the Joint Targeting Coordination Board (JTCB), formed by the US joint force commander, brought together different military services for better coordination and targeting.

Service Integration and Management (SIAM) works under a similar concept. SIAM helps clients succeed by providing them with a cohesive hybrid IT environment that integrates multiple service providers functioning in black-box mode into a collaborative, multi-vendor framework. The IT benefits? Greater environment visibility to make informed decisions, simplified governance and a standard way to design, build and run services.

A standard way to manage hybrid IT

SIAM has existed for years — why talk about it today? Remember the 2000 dot-com crash that affected many Internet-based retailers? The surrounding technologies such as mobile and security were not mature enough at that time to make e-commerce adoption successful.

Likewise, adoption of hybrid IT, multi-cloud technologies and as a Service models make SIAM imperative today. I believe that SIAM is going to play a crucial role in helping our clients achieve their business goals by extracting the best information from multi-sourced IT ecosystems.

The IBM Service Integration and Management platform is vendor agnostic and provides an indigenously developed SIAM process bus called Quick Start and a multi-vendor collaboration engine. This facilitates clients selecting vendors and integrating them into the plug and play Enterprise IT SIAM system. Its dashboard shows the entire IT environment.

The platform helps improve vendor accountability, which can improve operational efficiency and service quality.
