How to Determine the Right Mobile Management Solution

Confused by the numerous acronyms you can deploy to manage your mobile device program at your company? You’re not alone. It can often feel like sifting through alphabet soup to find the right mobile management solution — whether it’s MDM, MAM, EMM or UEM.

However, with more than eight in 10 workers equipped with smartphones, according to a recent CareerBuilder survey, companies must determine how to effectively manage mobile devices so that they enhance productivity and innovation without sacrificing security. To get started, you’ll need to sort through the options and understand why one mobile management solution might be better than the others for your company’s unique work environment.

To save time and ease confusion, here’s a look at what each mobile management solution offers.

Mobile Device Management (MDM)

MDM solutions offer IT the ability to manage employee or corporate-issued smartphones, tablets or other devices. With an MDM solution, IT can create multiple end-user profiles related to their specific roles and tasks. With these profiles, they can apply or revoke permissions on the device. They can set permissions for the type of apps that can be installed, lock out a device or remotely wipe data from a lost or stolen device.

While MDM offers IT administrators a fair amount of control and manageability, it is often a more appropriate solution for corporate-owned rather than bring-your-own-device (BYOD) environments. For employees who use a personal device at work, the idea of IT having the capability to wipe all of their data — including personal photos, music and messages — doesn’t sit well.

Mobile Application Management (MAM)

Instead of managing at the device level, an MAM solution manages the applications on the mobile device. This means that instead of locking down an entire device, a company can lock down specific enterprise applications and the data associated with those apps. With MAM, IT can wipe enterprise applications while leaving personal applications and data intact if a device is lost or stolen. Applications can also be remotely updated with new features and patches, making it easier for IT administrators to keep security threats at bay.

Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM)

EMM is a hardware-agnostic solution used to remotely manage enterprise devices. It combines the functionality of MDM and MAM solutions and equips IT to manage both the configuration of devices and the applications on those devices. An EMM solution typically provides companies with a more streamlined mobile management solution than deploying both MDM and MAM.

Unified End-Point Management (UEM)

UEM offers a single solution that equips IT to manage a number of business use cases. By allowing IT to manage devices across a variety of platforms, administrators can support BYOD devices with containerized work and personal applications while still maintaining full device management capabilities for corporate-owned devices. With a unified solution, IT can also provide users with a more consistent experience across all devices while utilizing remote capabilities to provision, control and secure all devices.
