As demands for mobility, flexible schedules and collaboration in the digital workplace continue to grow, today’s enterprise CIO has an opportunity to cultivate a successful digital environment while managing devices in the workplace.

Imagine the enterprise as an ecosystem of employees. Each ecosystem or employee has a process and a workflow. In a digital workplace, workflow can take place anywhere, anytime and from any device. With the flexibility to create their own work experiences, employees are free to find more effective ways to work across the ecosystem.

The modern CIO works to create new opportunities and enhance collaboration in the enterprise while also monitoring emerging threats. They also manage and deploy adaptable technology to empower both on- and off-site employees to work effectively.

Succeeding in the Digital Workplace

While digital workplaces provide easier access to people and information, the technology a CIO adopts can make or break communication. To drive success, the CIO as chief innovation officer should maintain these four goals:

  1. Working Agile: Empower the organization to keep up with rapid changes going on around it. Adopt technology that equips employees with a choice of devices that allow them to work anywhere, at any time.
  2. Social Collaboration: Support the company’s ability to bring together global teams. Social collaboration tools allow people to contribute across the world through solutions such as file sharing, team rooms, chat and video.
  3. Business Apps: Provide employees with a work experience that feels more like the consumer technology experience they are accustomed to. CIOs should repurpose legacy applications to preserve their value.
  4. Innovation: Equip the organization to move quickly and keep up in a changing world. Use technology in new ways. Create an engaging work experience for employees. Use analytics to foster a better understanding customers and markets.

Chief innovation officers are embracing disruptive innovation as technological advances continue to blur distinctions between different industries and new competitors. Modern CIOs are building agile cultures where rapid experimentation informed by reliable intelligence becomes the norm. The modern CIO is focusing less on reducing costs and more on stimulating innovation to drive success. Now, that’s digital disruption.
