The VDI Resurgence: 3 Big Benefits to Remember

Today’s business is quickly becoming a beacon of digital capabilities. Through this digital transformation, the user has been square in the driver’s seat creating requirements around BYOD, IT consumerization, and greater elements of mobility. The new digital era has forced administrators to deliver an IT consumption model which works to optimize the user and enhance their user experience.

To make this happen, the industry is widely adopting more virtual desktop and end-user compute (EUC) solutions. Consider this from the latest Gartner Midmarket Context: ‘Desktop Virtualization Will Power the Digital Workplace’ (Published, January 2016)[1]:

While midsize organizations have fewer legacy applications (50 to 80 on average), over 80% still resides on-premises, making integration a significant challenge. As midsize organizations modernize their application portfolios, they are likely to identify (and have to address) legacy applications faster than larger enterprises. Legacy applications can be cost-effectively addressed with desktop virtualization technologies, namely: virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI), server-based computing (SBC), and cloud application virtualization products and services.

With over 20% of midsize enterprises running VDI on-premises, and more than 20% in evaluation, coupled with 4% desktop as a service (DaaS) deployment and 13% in the process of evaluation, the shift has already begun for midsize organizations, and larger enterprises will eventually follow.

In the past, technologies like VDI were seen as heavy, fork-lift, projects which required time, resources, and big budgets. Well, there’s good news. With advancements within network, compute and the storage layer – desktop virtualization helps to reduce desktop IT costs, improve security, increase control, and expand connectivity. With desktop virtualization, desktops are hosted in your data center and can be accessed from any device, anywhere. This allows you to support new business models and improve both IT operations and user satisfaction.

  3. Centralize with VDI and Secure the Data Center. New delivery capabilities now allow you to completely centralize the virtual desktop. This creates a new security paradigm where nothing is stored at the endpoint. More so, HTML5 allows for complete clientless delivery so that sessions are completely controlled within the data center. This means you can isolate VDI sessions, geo-fence users, and create a proactive VDI security ecosystem. Basically, you’re creating a data center service architecture which can utilize even better virtualization security optimizations. You can granularly control access to specific data points, interrogate devices coming in, and manage where sensitive data points are being distributed.
